Trading and investing
Investing holds assets for years and relies on the growth of businesses and economies. Trading holds positions for days, weeks, or months and relies on identifying repeatable patterns in price, sentiment, or flows. Both can build wealth. Both fail without method. The mistake most beginners make is treating trading as the exciting alternative to investing, rather than as a skill that sits on top of an investing foundation.
Felix Prehn, the economist and former investment banker who founded Goat Academy, teaches trading as the third of 4 steps to building wealth: after the financial foundation and the core portfolio are in place, and before protection. The guide to the 4 key steps explains the sequence.
What separates wealth building trading from gambling
- 01A defined edge. A specific, testable reason why a type of trade should be profitable over many repetitions. Without one, results are random.
- 02Fixed risk per trade. Deciding in advance the maximum loss on any position, commonly 1% to 2% of capital, so that a run of losses is survivable.
- 03A written plan. Entry conditions, exit conditions, and position size recorded before the trade, so that decisions are made calmly rather than reactively.
- 04A review process. A log of every trade, reviewed on a schedule, to find which parts of the method are working and which are not.
- 05Regime awareness. Knowing whether the market is trending, ranging, or in transition, because most strategies work in some conditions and fail in others.
Where Goat Academy starts
Goat Academy begins with options income strategies, in particular covered calls and defined risk spreads. They are chosen because the maximum loss is known before entry, because they benefit from time decay rather than requiring a directional prediction, and because they build the habits of sizing and planning that every other strategy depends on.
From there the Wall Street Protocol teaches technical analysis for timing, fundamental analysis for selection, and the macroeconomic context that determines which strategies suit the current regime. Felix's daily market intelligence tool, Winston, supports the regime assessment.
Trading carries the risk of loss, and most people who trade without method lose money. Nothing on this page promises any result.
